The "Childhood Memories" collection goes all the way back to the late 1960's, Terceira, Azores. The origin of Rui Docouto. The late 60's and 70's in Terceira had its limitations on commercial toys, exploring nature was a very natural form of entertainment for a child. Those memories left a tremendous impact on Rui as an adult. In 2002 while designing a NYC restaurant, he came across some oval shapes that reminded him of his earlier bug drawings. He took those shapes and started experimenting with different leg configuration to get the sense/feeling of movement in the piece. After years of experimenting the first bug lamp was completed, Lucana. The goal with the bug-lamps was to give them a feeling of movement as though they were alive and in the process of movement, as they still are in the artist/designers memory. The bug lamps can be used for both indoor and be modified for outdoor use. Besides the lamps having a function of illuminating space, they are also pieces of sculptures, which are existent in any environment. Rui's work through the years has been about movement, from painting to functional sculptural pieces of furniture and lighting. The 2009 pieces designed together with his wife Nahid Rupani are intended to do the same visually, physically and/or emotionally with affordable prices in mind and without compromising with the design integrity of Rui Docouto's Childhood Memories.
